THE MEANING

What does the Six of Pentacles mean in tarot?

The Six of Pentacles is a Minor Arcana card in the suit of Pentacles, linked with Earth. Upright, it stands for generosity and fair exchange: giving, receiving and sharing resources so that need is met with care. Reversed, the Six of Pentacles points to imbalance in giving and taking, dependence, or help that goes unappreciated.

Is the Six of Pentacles a positive card?

The Six of Pentacles is a generous, warm card, a sign of support given and received with fairness. Its caution concerns balance and hidden conditions, and when the card is reversed, it asks you to restore gratitude and equity.

Is the Six of Pentacles a yes or no card?

Upright: leans yesReversed: not yet

The Six of Pentacles leans yes when it falls upright, because it describes generosity and fair exchange, resources moving where they are needed. The yes is strongest when the question involves asking for help, offering it or reaching a fair arrangement. Reversed, the Six of Pentacles leans toward not yet: giving and receiving have become uneven, or help carries hidden conditions. The card suggests restoring fairness first.

UPRIGHT AND REVERSED

Two ways the Six of Pentacles can fall

A reversed card is read as blocked, inward or delayed energy, never simply as its opposite.

AS IT FALLS

The Six of Pentacles upright

Upright, the Six of Pentacles describes resources moving where they are needed. You may be in a position to give, whether time, knowledge, attention or practical support, and the card encourages you to do so freely and fairly. It can equally describe a moment when generosity comes toward you, in which case it asks you to receive it with grace rather than embarrassment. Beneath both roles lies a question of balance: who gives, who receives, and whether the exchange respects everyone involved. The Six of Pentacles honours kindness that restores dignity and gently notices when giving carries hidden conditions. It asks you to consider which part you are playing now, and to let generosity be honest, proportionate and free of strings.

TURNED OVER

The Six of Pentacles reversed

Reversed, the Six of Pentacles suggests that the flow of giving and receiving has become uneven. You may be relying on others’ support more than feels comfortable, or receiving help while finding it hard to acknowledge. The card can point to gratitude that has slipped, generosity taken for granted, or kindness offered with expectations that create quiet obligation. It can also describe a period when your own difficulties are being eased by someone else’s care, and the work is to accept that with humility. The reversed Six is an invitation to restore fairness: to say thank you and mean it, to notice where a relationship has tilted, and to give back in whatever form is genuinely within your reach.

  • receiving charity
  • hardship eased by others
  • dependence
AS ADVICE
Say thank you, and mean it.
AS A CHALLENGE

THE GILDED GARDEN

The Six of Pentacles in this deck

In the Gilded Garden deck, the Six shows a golden balance scale at the centre, its two bowls filled by a pair of hands reaching in from opposite sides, each pouring a stream of grain. Three pentacles hang on each side among leafy branches, perfectly matched. Below, stone steps lead toward a quiet river valley. The level scale and the two giving hands suggest exchange in which neither side is above the other.
