THE MEANING

What does the Hermit mean in tarot?

The Hermit is the ninth card of the Major Arcana, an Earth card linked with Virgo. Upright, it stands for introspection, wise counsel and a path walked by your own light. Reversed, the Hermit points to solitude that has turned into isolation, advice set aside, or a decision that needs more reflection before it is ready.

Is the Hermit a positive card?

The Hermit is a wise, supportive card, a sign of insight, guidance and self-knowledge. Its caution concerns isolation: solitude can harden into loneliness, and when reversed, the card asks you to accept good counsel rather than carry everything alone.

Is the Hermit a yes or no card?

Upright: not yetReversed: leans no

The Hermit leans toward not yet when it falls upright, because it is a card of withdrawal and reflection: the answer is still forming within you rather than in outside events. Reversed, the Hermit leans no, suggesting isolation, good counsel set aside, or a decision made before it has been thought through. The lean always depends on the question; time alone and a trusted adviser can both clarify it.

UPRIGHT AND REVERSED

Two ways the Hermit can fall

A reversed card is read as blocked, inward or delayed energy, never simply as its opposite.

AS IT FALLS

The Hermit upright

Upright, the Hermit describes a deliberate step back from noise. It is a time for turning inward to understand rather than to hide, and the insight it offers tends to come slowly, through experience, study and honest reflection rather than through consensus. The light the Hermit carries shows only the next step, which is often enough. The card can describe sound guidance from someone further along the road, or your own seasoned judgement becoming a lamp for others. It may also mark a path that is yours alone, unconventional and chosen on purpose. What the Hermit asks of you is quiet and time: make room to think before you decide, and trust the understanding that grows in stillness.

  • counsel
  • introspection
  • solitude by choice
  • inner guidance
  • mentorship
  • an unconventional path
AS ADVICE
Step back from the noise. Give yourself quiet and time before you decide.
AS A CHALLENGE
Withdrawal or overthinking is slowing you down; the lamp only shows one step at a time.

TURNED OVER

The Hermit reversed

Reversed, the Hermit suggests that the inward turn has gone astray or has not yet begun. Solitude that once restored you may have hardened into loneliness or avoidance, keeping out the very help you need. Sometimes the card points to counsel that was offered and set aside, and to a present situation shaped partly by that choice, though returning to the advice is still possible. In other readings, the reversed Hermit simply says the insight is not ripe: understanding needs more time before a decision makes sense. It can also describe a belief that everything has to be managed alone. The card invites you to seek out someone who has walked this road, and to let reflection open you rather than close you off.

  • counsel ignored
  • isolation
  • going it alone
  • unreadiness
  • stubbornness
  • withdrawal
AS ADVICE
Seek out a mentor or someone who has walked this road; you don’t have to work it all out alone.
AS A CHALLENGE
The belief that you know best, or that you must manage alone, stands in your way.

IN YOUR LIFE

The Hermit in love, work and the inner life

The Hermit in love

The Hermit in love suggests a need for space to understand what you truly want, or a bond that respects each person’s inner life. Reversed, the Hermit can describe withdrawal that a partner may read as rejection, or a loneliness that can be felt even in close company.

The Hermit at work

The Hermit in work points toward mentorship, careful planning and specialist or independent work that rewards depth. Reversed, the Hermit can describe resisting advice from experienced colleagues, or working in isolation to your own cost, a sign to reach out and share the load before going further.

THE GILDED GARDEN

The Hermit in this deck

In the Gilded Garden deck, the Hermit appears without any figure at all. A golden lantern hangs from a chain beneath a crescent moon, and inside it burns a single eight-pointed star. Below, worn stone steps climb out of a shadowed valley where a thin stream catches the light, flanked by dark boulders and pale flowering vines. The lantern suggests inner guidance that lights one step at a time.

IN A SPREAD

How to read the Hermit in a spread

In the present position, the Hermit often describes a period of reflection or a need for distance. As a challenge, it can point to withdrawal or overthinking slowing you down. As advice, it asks you to step back from the noise and give yourself time. Near an outcome, it suggests understanding gained rather than a dramatic result. Among other Major Arcana, the Hermit deepens the reading’s search for meaning.
