The mind, body, spirit spread
The mind body spirit tarot spread reads your thoughts, your actions and your spiritual guidance in three cards. Its positions, an example, and what it is not for.
The mind, body, spirit tarot spread is a three-card layout that reads three parts of you rather than three points in time: your thoughts and attitudes (mind), your actions and practical life (body), and spiritual guidance for the situation (spirit). It suits inner questions and questions of balance, when something feels out of step and you want to see where. It is not a way to read your health.
How do you lay the mind, body, spirit spread?
The mind, body, spirit spread is laid from the centre outward, beginning with the body. Shuffle with your question in mind, then draw in this order.
- Card 1 goes in the centre: Body.
- Card 2 goes to its left: Mind.
- Card 3 goes to its right: Spirit.
Starting with the body grounds the reading in what is actually happening, before what you think about it or what it means.

What do the three positions mean?
The three positions of this spread have no past or future. Each describes a part of you as it is now, in relation to the question.
Body
The body position describes your actions and conduct, and the physical, practical world: how you spend your days, what you do and avoid doing, your work, home and routines. It is the visible part of the matter. Read it as conduct, not as the condition of your body; a card here says nothing about your health.
Mind
The mind position describes your thoughts and attitudes toward the situation: what you believe about it, how you explain it to yourself, the decisions you are weighing. It may or may not match what the body card shows you doing.
Spirit
The spirit position offers spiritual guidance for the situation: what matters most beneath the surface, the value or quality the matter is asking you to honour. You need no religious frame to read it: what you hold most deeply will do.
Is the mind, body, spirit spread for health questions?
The mind, body, spirit spread is not for health questions, and no tarot spread can tell you anything reliable about your physical or mental health. The name can suggest otherwise, so it is worth saying plainly. If you are worried about your health, a doctor or another qualified professional is the right person to ask, and it is a kindness to yourself to ask them soon.
What the spread can do is help you reflect on how you are meeting a hard time. Used that way, it can sit alongside proper care, never in place of it. A question such as “What is wrong with me?” belongs with a professional; “How can I look after my sense of balance this month?” is one the cards can hold.
How do you read mind, body and spirit together?
The mind, body, spirit spread is read by comparing the two outer cards first, then the centre card between them.
- Mind against spirit. When the two pull the same way, thought and deeper guidance agree, and the body card often shows how to act on that agreement. When they disagree, the tension between them is usually the point of the reading.
- The body as the meeting point. The centre card shows what you are actually doing. Ask whether it serves the mind card, the spirit card, or neither.
- Cards at home in their position. A Swords card in the mind position, or a Pentacles card in the body position, speaks in its native element and tends to read clearly. A card far from its element, such as a Wands card in the mind, can suggest thought driven by impatience or heat.
A worked example
Here is a reading for the question “Why do I feel out of step with myself since I changed jobs?”. The cards were drawn Body first, then Mind, then Spirit.
- Body: the Four of Pentacles. Holding on: security, control and caution that can harden into a tight grip.
- Mind: the Two of Swords. A stalemate, a decision held at arm’s length.
- Spirit: the Hermit. Introspection, and a path walked by your own light.
Begin with the outer pair. In the Gilded Garden deck, the Two of Swords shows two blades crossed and bound by a pale ribbon, in perfect balance and perfectly still. The Hermit shows no figure at all: only a golden lantern beneath a crescent moon, a star burning inside it, and worn steps climbing out of a valley. Both cards describe stillness, but not the same stillness. The Two of Swords is a pause that avoids a choice; the Hermit is a pause that looks for one, lighting a single step at a time. Their elements underline the difference: the Two is an Air card and the Hermit an Earth card, a pairing whose elements pull in opposite directions. The mind is holding still; the spirit asks for a different kind of stillness.

The body card shows how this is being lived. The Four of Pentacles is an iron-bound chest on stone steps, half swallowed by ivy, with an open lake and mountains beyond. Since the change of job, the days may have closed around routine and caution, holding the new situation at a distance until it feels safe. The Four shares Earth with the Hermit, which suggests the way through is practical rather than abstract. The Hermit’s steps and the Four’s steps are the same material; one leads somewhere, the other has been left to the ivy.
Joined in one sentence: you have been holding still out of caution, and what would serve you is a quieter, more deliberate stillness that looks for one clear next step. The Hermit is the only Major in the spread, so the weight of the reading sits with that guidance.
Variations to lay with your own deck
These variations are not spreads in the TarotSeeker app. They are common adaptations you can lay with your own deck.
- Mind, heart, body, spirit. A fourth card for feeling, laid above the body, when emotion seems to be missing from the picture.
- Head, heart, hands. Thought, feeling and action, for a practical question about how you are approaching something.
When should you choose a larger or smaller spread?
The mind, body, spirit spread suits a question about yourself, now. If you want one quality to carry through the day, The one-card draw is lighter. If the question is a choice between paths, Tarot for a decision is the better place to start. If the inner question has a history and you want to see it unfold, The story in three acts reads the same three cards as a story instead.
Mind, body, spirit in TarotSeeker
Mind, body, spirit is free in the app, and a free Seeker account includes a reading each month. Before the reading, the app helps you shape your question; it suggests reframes for vague questions and declines those it should not answer, such as a request for a medical verdict. Shuffle your own deck and enter the three cards as they fall, or let the app draw for you, and add your own first impression first. The companion reads each position and the pull between mind and spirit, and shows the grounds for each connection, so you can test it against what you know of yourself.
Questions readers ask
What is the mind body spirit tarot spread?
The mind body spirit tarot spread is a three-card layout that reads three parts of you instead of past, present and future. The left card is mind, your thoughts and attitudes; the centre card is body, your actions and practical life; the right card is spirit, guidance on what matters most. It suits inner questions and questions of balance, and is drawn from the centre, body first.
What does the body card mean in a mind, body, spirit spread?
The body card in a mind, body, spirit spread describes your actions and conduct and the practical world around you: how you spend your days, your work, home and routines. It shows what you are actually doing about the question. It does not describe your physical health, and it should not be read as a statement about your body’s condition.
Can you use a mind, body, spirit spread for health questions?
A mind, body, spirit spread should not be used for health questions, because tarot cannot diagnose or assess physical or mental health. If you are worried about your health, a doctor or qualified professional is the right person to ask. The spread can help you reflect on how you are meeting a difficult time, alongside proper care, but never in place of it.
What if the mind and spirit cards disagree?
When the mind and spirit cards disagree in a mind, body, spirit spread, the disagreement is usually the heart of the reading. It suggests that what you think about the situation and what matters most to you are pulling in different directions. Look at the body card next: it often shows which of the two you are acting on, and where a small change of conduct could bring them closer.
